Oak Park, IL Noise Ordinances: Barking Dogs (2026)

Section 17-1-30(E) of the Oak Park Village Code addresses animal noise in a single sentence inside the Village's general noise ordinance: the keeping of any animal which by causing noise shall disturb the peace. The provision is deliberately broad. It does not name dogs specifically, does not set a duration threshold like a number of minutes of continuous barking, and does not require a written complaint before enforcement; any animal, kept anywhere in the Village, whose noise disturbs the peace of others can trigger a citation.

That breadth means the same subsection reaches barking dogs, crowing roosters, or any other noisy animal a resident keeps, rather than routing dog-specific noise through Chapter 5, Animals. The subsection sits among section 17-1-30's other enumerated noise sources, including vehicle horns, sound equipment, yelling on the streets, and unmuffled engine exhaust, all under the section's opening declaration that loud, unnecessary, prolonged, or unusual noise disturbing the peace is unlawful and that the enumerated list is not exclusive. Because the standard is disturbing the peace rather than a specific decibel or time limit, enforcement turns on the facts an officer observes or a neighbor reports, not a bright-line rule.
