Plainfield's Land Use Ordinance (Ch. 17) does not single carports out by name; it regulates them through the general accessory-structure rule at Section 17:9-19. Accessory structures must sit on the same lot as the principal use, are not allowed in a front yard, and must be set back at least three feet from each side and rear property line. A development permit from Planning and Zoning is required before installation, and a Uniform Construction Code building permit is required for the framed roof structure under N.J.A.C. 5:23. No more than three accessory structures are allowed on a lot, and total accessory coverage is capped at 35% of the principal building's ground area.
