Bridgeport does not impose calendar limits on residential holiday light displays or require permits to install Christmas lights, Hanukkah candles, or other seasonal decorations on single-family property. Temporary, non-commercial holiday decorations are exempt from the Bridgeport sign regulations at Chapter 15.32 of the Code of Ordinances. Electrical installations must comply with the National Electrical Code as adopted by the Connecticut State Building Code, and nighttime light spillover is constrained by general nuisance law.
Bridgeport has no ordinance setting a take-down date for holiday lights or capping the number of inflatables in a yard. The applicable framework is residual: (1) Sign regulations. Chapter 15.32 of the Bridgeport Code of Ordinances governs signs but the sign definition typically excludes non-commercial holiday and seasonal decorations β temporary, non-commercial Christmas, Hanukkah, Diwali, and similar displays at a residence are not regulated as signs. (2) Electrical Code. Permanent or fixed exterior lighting installations are governed by the National Electrical Code (NEC) as incorporated into the Connecticut State Building Code under CGS Section 29-252; the Bridgeport Building Department issues electrical permits for any new exterior receptacle, GFCI replacement, or hardwired display, and any electrical work for compensation must be performed by a CT-licensed electrician under CGS Section 20-330. Standard plug-in light strings used seasonally do not require permits. (3) Nuisance and light trespass. Connecticut's common law of private nuisance and Bridgeport's general nuisance authority address light spillover that materially interferes with a neighbor's use and enjoyment of their property; egregious cases (large flood arrays aimed into a neighbor's bedroom) may justify an abatement order. (4) Historic district. If the residence is within Bridgeport's local historic district, the Historic District Commission under CGS Sections 7-147a et seq. reviews exterior alterations β purely temporary holiday lights typically do not require a certificate of appropriateness, but permanent mounting hardware may. There is no statewide CT statute restricting holiday lights.
Unpermitted permanent electrical work to support a large light display: stop-work order and after-the-fact permit penalties under CGS Section 29-265 and the Bridgeport Building Department's enforcement procedure. Unlicensed electrical contracting (paid installation): enforcement by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection under CGS Section 20-330. Light trespass that constitutes a private nuisance: civil action in Connecticut Superior Court (Fairfield Judicial District at Bridgeport) for injunctive relief and damages. Historic district unauthorized exterior alteration: enforcement by the Bridgeport Historic District Commission under CGS Section 7-147g.
