Bridgeport does not have a lawn ornament ordinance regulating gnomes, statues, flamingoes, religious displays, or other yard decor on residential property. Practical limits come from the Bridgeport Zoning Regulations on sight-triangle clearance at intersections, accessory-structure setback rules if an ornament is large enough to qualify as a structure, the sign regulations at Chapter 15.32, and any private deed restrictions or HOA rules under CGS Sections 47-200 et seq.
Connecticut municipalities lack any statewide framework on residential yard ornamentation, and Bridgeport has not enacted a dedicated ordinance. The framework that applies indirectly: (1) Sight triangle. The Bridgeport Zoning Regulations require that the area within a sight triangle at street corners be kept clear of obstructions over a specified height (typically 2.5 to 3 feet) to preserve driver and pedestrian visibility β large lawn ornaments at the corner of a corner lot can be cited under this provision. (2) Setbacks. If an ornament is large or anchored enough to qualify as an 'accessory structure' (oversized statuary, masonry shrines, large fountains with footings), it must meet the side and rear setback requirements applicable to accessory structures in the underlying zoning district under the Bridgeport Zoning Regulations. (3) Sign code. Chapter 15.32 of the Bridgeport Code distinguishes between signs (regulated) and non-commercial decorative items (not regulated). A religious lawn display, political yard sign, or American flag is governed by First Amendment protections, the federal Freedom to Display the American Flag Act (Public Law 109-243), CGS Section 7-148s (regarding solar collectors and flags), and a robust line of US Supreme Court precedent (Reed v. Town of Gilbert) protecting non-commercial speech. (4) Historic districts. If the property lies within a Bridgeport local historic district under CGS Sections 7-147a et seq., the Historic District Commission may review permanent exterior changes, though temporary seasonal decorations usually escape review. (5) Private restrictions. Many Bridgeport subdivisions have recorded CC&Rs enforceable under CGS Sections 47-200 et seq. (Common Interest Ownership Act) that limit lawn ornaments, holiday displays, or color schemes β these are stricter than city rules in many cases.
There is no Bridgeport ordinance against lawn ornaments in general, but indirect violations include: obstructing the corner sight triangle (Zoning Department citation under CGS Section 8-12); placing a large accessory structure within the setback (Zoning Enforcement Officer notice); installing a permanent sign that violates Chapter 15.32 size or location rules; or violating recorded HOA covenants (enforced through fines and Superior Court injunctive relief under CGS Section 47-244). First Amendment-protected non-commercial yard displays (flags, religious symbols, political signs) cannot be selectively prohibited by the city.
