Albuquerque's Gateway Center on Gibson Boulevard, which opened phased operations in 2023, serves as the city's central low-barrier shelter and bridge-housing hub, with on-site medical respite, women's housing, and connections to permanent supportive housing partners.
The Gateway Center, located in the former Lovelace Hospital on Gibson SE, is the cornerstone of Albuquerque's bridge-housing strategy. Phased opening began in 2023 with a First Responder Receiving Area, expanded in 2024 with women's emergency housing and medical respite, and continues toward roughly 660 beds. The center is run by the Department of Health, Housing and Homelessness with nonprofit partners including Heading Home and Casa de la Luz, and links residents to vouchers, treatment, and permanent supportive housing. The Westside Emergency Housing Center on Iris Road, plus family shelters, complete the bridge-housing network funded under Mayor Keller's housing initiatives.
Bringing weapons or contraband into the Gateway Center, missing required check-in for assigned bridge programs, or violating site rules can result in loss of bed assignment and referral to alternative shelter or outreach.
