Bexar County defers to the Texas Department of Agriculture's noxious weed list. The region's most problematic invasive plants include giant reed (Arundo donax), Chinaberry, and ligustrum (privet). San Antonio has tree preservation ordinances but no separate prohibited plant list.
Texas Agriculture Code Chapter 71 establishes noxious plant regulations enforced by the Texas Department of Agriculture. Bexar County does not maintain a separate prohibited species list. In the San Antonio area, particularly problematic invasive species include giant reed (Arundo donax) along waterways, Chinaberry (Melia azedarach), Chinese tallow (Triadica sebifera), ligustrum/privet, and King Ranch bluestem. San Antonio has a Tree Preservation Ordinance (Chapter 35, Article VI) protecting heritage and significant trees but does not prohibit specific plant species on private property. The San Antonio River Authority actively manages invasive species along waterways in the county.
Violations of state noxious weed regulations are enforced by TDA. Local weed abatement for fire or safety hazards may be enforced through municipal property maintenance codes with fines up to $2,000 per day.
