Lincoln requires property owners to cut weeds and worthless vegetation that exceeds six inches above the ground under LMC Chapter 8.46. Owners must also maintain one-half of abutting streets and alleys. City weed abatement enforces compliance seasonally.
Lincoln Municipal Code Chapter 8.46 (Weed Abatement) requires owners of real estate to cut and clear all weeds or worthless vegetation whenever it extends more than six inches above the ground. The duty extends to one-half of the streets and alleys abutting the property. The ordinance was enacted under the health section of city code to control vegetation that harbors mice, rats, and other vermin. If an owner fails to comply after notice, the city may abate the weeds and assess the cost against the property. The Lancaster County Weed Authority and Lincoln Code Enforcement coordinate seasonal inspections. Violations are handled through the abatement process with costs charged to the property owner. Contact the Lincoln Action Center at (402) 441-7511 to report overgrown lots.
