The City of Savannah declares untended growth of weeds and grass on any lot a public nuisance and orders it abated. Unincorporated Chatham and other cities enforce their own overgrowth rules; there is no single county-wide grass-height number.
Savannah's nuisance code (Sec. 9-2067) does not set a numeric height in inches; instead it declares 'excessive accumulation or untended growth of weeds and other like growths or grass' on land, whether vacant or occupied, to be a nuisance that endangers public health, safety, and welfare and impairs adjacent property values. Code Compliance investigates complaints and, after notice, follows the abatement procedures in Sec. 9-2068. Unincorporated Chatham County and the smaller municipalities (Pooler, Garden City, Tybee Island) apply their own property-maintenance standards. Keep lawns mowed and cleared of tall weeds to avoid a citation.
After notice under Sec. 9-2068, the city may abate (mow/clear) the property, bill the owner, and place a lien for unpaid abatement costs.
