For a homeowner maintaining trees on their own residential parcel, Lake County requires no permit to prune or trim. Under Florida Statute 163.045, a local government may not require notice, application, approval, permit, fee, or mitigation to prune, trim, or remove a tree if the owner has documentation from an ISA-certified arborist or Florida-licensed landscape architect that the tree poses an unacceptable risk. Trimming that is part of a development project, or that affects protected/heritage trees on a development site, is governed by the county Land Development Regulations (LDR) Chapter IX. Do not top or over-prune trees within required landscape buffers on developed commercial sites.
Homeowner pruning is generally unregulated. On development/commercial sites, damaging or removing protected trees outside an approved plan can trigger LDR replacement/mitigation and code enforcement.
