Rankin County enforces abandoned vehicle rules on public roads and can address junked vehicles on private property under nuisance ordinances. Mississippi Code Β§63-23-1 et seq. governs vehicle abandonment. Vehicles left 48+ hours on public property may be towed.
Under Mississippi Code Β§63-23-1 et seq., a vehicle left unattended on public property for more than 48 hours is presumed abandoned. The Rankin County Sheriff's Department may tag and tow such vehicles to a licensed wrecker storage facility, where owners are notified by certified mail. Unclaimed vehicles proceed to title-defect sale after the statutory period. On private property, inoperable or junked vehicles (expired tags, flat tires, no current registration, disassembled) may be cited as a public nuisance under Rankin County's property maintenance provisions if visible from the road and not within a fully enclosed structure. Common abatement process: written notice to property owner, 10 to 30 days to cure, followed by county abatement with costs becoming a lien against the property. Licensed salvage yards and bona fide repair businesses with zoning approval are exempt.
Public abandonment: towing and storage ($175 to $500+), title forfeiture if unclaimed. Private junk vehicles: nuisance abatement, lien against property for removal costs, fines $50 to $500 per occurrence.
