Mariposa County Code 8.36.020 defines an 'abandoned vehicle' as a vehicle left on public or private property for an extended period, usually inoperable or hazardous. Removal of abandoned, wrecked, or inoperative vehicles is handled under California Vehicle Code authority (22651, 22660-22662) and county Code Compliance.
The County of Mariposa addresses abandoned vehicles in its code primarily through definitions and enforcement rather than a standalone vehicle-abatement chapter. Mariposa County Code 8.36.020(1) defines 'Abandoned vehicles' as including 'vehicles, with or without motor power, including cars, trucks, trailers, mobile homes, buses, etc., left on public or private property for an extended period of time and usually in an inoperable or hazardous condition.' On public roads, removal authority comes from the California Vehicle Code: under CVC 22651(k) a vehicle left over 72 hours may be removed, and CVC 22669 covers removal of abandoned vehicles. For abandoned, wrecked, dismantled, or inoperative vehicles on private or public property as a public nuisance, California Vehicle Code 22660-22662 authorize a county to abate and remove them, with a notice of intention to abate issued not less than 10 days before removal unless the owner signs a release. Complaints about junk or inoperative vehicles in unincorporated Mariposa County are handled by county Code Compliance (compliance@mariposacounty.org). Violations of the solid-waste chapter are misdemeanors punishable under MCC Chapter 1.20, the general penalty provision.
Abandoned vehicles on public roads may be towed under California Vehicle Code 22651(k) and 22669. Inoperative or junk vehicles on private property may be abated as a public nuisance under CVC 22660-22662 after written notice. Solid-waste code violations are misdemeanors under MCC Chapter 1.20.
