New Jersey state law now fines anyone who blocks a designated EV charging space, including gas cars and EVs not actively charging. EV charging-station zoning follows the state's model municipal ordinance adopted through each town.
New Jersey's electric-vehicle law (A3035, signed 2025) makes it a parking offense to occupy a marked EV charging space with a vehicle that is not actively charging. Enforcement is by local police and parking officers. Where EV charging stations may be built is governed by the NJ Department of Community Affairs statewide model municipal EV ordinance, which towns adopt under the Municipal Land Use Law; Burlington County itself does not zone chargers on residential property. Clear signage is required to designate EV-only spaces before the fine applies.
Blocking a designated EV charging space: $55 first offense, $100 second, and $200 for a third or subsequent violation under the state law.
