Hawthorne's own ordinance (HMC 10.36.190) prohibits parking or storing oversized vehicles on residential streets. An oversized vehicle is one over 22 feet long, or both over 84 inches wide and over 84 inches tall. Street use is limited to 48 hours, extendable to 72 hours only with police approval.
Hawthorne specifically defines and restricts oversized vehicles under Hawthorne Municipal Code Section 10.36.190. The code defines a 'large motor vehicle' or 'oversized vehicle' as any house car, pick-up truck with camper, recreational vehicle, or other vehicle that measures more than 22 feet in length, or is both more than 84 inches in width and more than 84 inches in height. The definition expressly excludes a commercial vehicle (defined in 10.36.060), a pick-up truck without a camper, and a sport-utility vehicle, so ordinary trucks and SUVs are not 'oversized.' Section 10.36.190 prohibits using city streets for the parking or storage of these large vehicles. In residential districts, an oversized vehicle (or a non-motorized vehicle attached to one) may be allowed up to an additional 24 consecutive hours beyond the base period, but no more than a total of 72 consecutive hours, and only if the chief of police grants an extension. The extension request must be made at least three city business days in advance and directed to the traffic bureau of the Hawthorne Police Department. A resident may obtain an oversized parking permit for a non-resident visitor temporarily residing with them, valid only on the same block as the resident's address. These length and dimension thresholds are local rules that go beyond the general California Vehicle Code.
Parking or storing an oversized vehicle (over 22 ft, or over 84 in wide and tall) on a residential street beyond the allowed period without a police-granted extension is a parking violation under HMC 10.36.190, subject to citation and towing.
