The City of Hawthorne has its own ordinance. Under Hawthorne Municipal Code 10.36.190, recreational vehicles and oversized vehicles cannot be parked or stored on residential streets except briefly for travel-related loading, cleaning, or unloading, and only up to 48 hours. Extensions require police approval.
Hawthorne, an incorporated city in Los Angeles County, regulates RV and boat parking through its own municipal code rather than relying on county rules. Section 10.36.190 prohibits parking or storing 'large vehicles, including recreational vehicles and house car' on residential streets. An RV may only be parked on a residential street for loading, unloading, cleaning, or other activity related to travel, and in that case may remain no more than 48 hours. The code defines a 'large motor vehicle' or 'oversized vehicle' as any house car, pick-up truck with camper, recreational vehicle, or other vehicle measuring more than 22 feet in length, or both more than 84 inches wide and more than 84 inches tall. Beyond the initial 48 hours, the chief of police may grant extensions in increments of 24 hours, but the total may not exceed 72 consecutive hours. A request for an extension must be made at least three city business days in advance and directed to the traffic bureau of the Hawthorne Police Department. A resident may also obtain an oversized parking permit for a non-resident visitor temporarily staying with them; that permit is valid only on the same block as the resident's address. This is stricter than the bare California Vehicle Code, which does not by itself cap RV street parking at 48 hours.
Parking an RV, boat trailer, or oversized vehicle on a residential street beyond 48 hours without a police-approved extension is a parking violation enforceable by Hawthorne Police Department parking enforcement, code enforcement, and other authorized officers. Continued violation can lead to citation and towing.
