Nashville does not currently require building permits for fence construction. Fences must comply with zoning height and setback requirements. Solid fences in front setbacks have specific height and distance restrictions.
Nashville does not require a building permit for fence construction at this time. However, all fences must comply with Metro Nashville's zoning and building code requirements for height, placement, and materials. In the front setback area (within 10 feet of the street property line), solid fences cannot exceed 30 inches in height. Open-style fences like chain-link or wrought iron can be up to 72 inches in the front setback. Between the front setback and the front of the house, fences can be up to 6 feet. Side and rear fences can be up to 8 feet. Corner lot fences must maintain sight triangles. Swimming pool enclosures have separate requirements under the building code (typically minimum 48 inches with self-closing, self-latching gate). Materials must be appropriate for the zone and neighborhood. Barbed wire is restricted in residential areas. Property owners should confirm their property boundaries before building and ensure fences do not encroach on utility easements. While no permit fee applies, non-compliant fences may still receive violation notices.
Non-compliant fences: notice of violation with compliance deadline. Height violations: required to reduce height or modify fence.
