Fences that include masonry or concrete elements above 6 feet require a construction permit and structural review. Fences in flood-prone areas require review to ensure they do not obstruct flood flows. Fences in shoreline districts or environmentally critical areas may require additional environmental review. Retaining walls over 4 feet also require permits. Property line disputes should be resolved through a survey before fence construction. If the fence will be on or near the property line, SDCI recommends confirming the boundary with a licensed surveyor.
