Longmont, CO Property Maintenance: Garage Sale Rules (2026)

Longmont's garage-sale ordinance (LMC 6.44.090 per the city's Code Enforcement page) sets two hard limits at the same residential location: (1) any individual garage, yard, estate, or moving sale may run for no more than 3 consecutive days; and (2) the total number of garage-sale days at the same location may not exceed 12 days in any calendar year. Together these limits effectively cap activity at four 3-day sales per year. The intent is to prevent residential properties from operating as de facto retail businesses. Garage sales themselves do not require a city license or permit, and sale of household personal property is not subject to Longmont sales tax. Signage rules apply separately: under LMC Chapter 15.06, garage-sale signs must be on-premise (placed on the property where the sale occurs), may not be placed in the public right-of-way, and may not be attached to utility poles, street signs, traffic signs, hydrants, trees, shrubs, or fences. Off-premise directional signs are subject to removal by Code Enforcement. Violations of the frequency / duration limits or the signage rules trigger Longmont's civil-penalty schedule of $100 / $200 / $500.
