Prince George's County requires refuse to be stored in approved covered containers and limits when curbside trash and recycling carts may sit out. County Code Section 21-113 governs storage; carts must be pulled back from the curb on the scheduled collection day after service is completed.
County Code Section 21-113 (Storage of refuse) requires all garbage to be stored in approved containers with tight-fitting lids and makes the occupant responsible for the sanitary condition of the premises. For curbside collection, containers may be put out only after 6:00 p.m. the day before collection and must be removed the day of collection. Trash must be in a metal or tough plastic container with handles and a tight-fitting lid under 60 lbs, or one securely tied opaque bag per collection. The Sustainable Waste Management Division issues each household one trash, one recycling, and one organics cart. Carts left at the curb after collection draw a DPIE removal notice; carts out 48 hours later are retrieved and not replaced.
Leaving carts at the curb after the collection day triggers a Service Request and inspector notice for removal and proper storage. Commercial or multifamily properties with repeat Section 21-113 violations face fines from $1,000 up to $5,000 per property.
