Auburn issues each residence a city-owned garbage cart, tracked by serial number and assigned to the address. Carts may be set out the night before collection but must be pulled back to the rear of the residence after pickup. Extra loose cans and bags beside the cart are not permitted.
The City of Auburn's Environmental Services Department provides each residential customer with a city-issued garbage cart at no charge. Each cart is tracked by the serial number printed on it and is assigned to a specific residence, so carts stay with the property. To obtain or replace a cart, residents contact Environmental Services at (334) 501-3080 or visit 365-A North Donahue Drive. Regarding storage and placement, carts may be rolled out the night before the scheduled collection day, but the city directs that they 'must be pulled back to the rear of your residence upon collection,' keeping carts out of sight between pickups. When set out, carts should sit within three feet behind the curb or roadside, away from poles, mailboxes, vehicles, and other obstructions, with the lid opening facing the street so the automated truck can service them. Auburn does not allow extra capacity to be stacked around the cart: 'No additional garbage cans or bags should be placed out for collection on or beside the garbage cart.' Households that regularly generate excess garbage may request an additional cart or container for an extra monthly fee rather than leaving loose bags out. Standard curbside residential garbage service is $32.00 per month, and backdoor service (the cart is serviced at the residence rather than the curb) is $69.50 per month; an approved medical waiver allows backdoor service at the curbside rate.
Leaving extra cans or bags beside the cart, or leaving carts at the curb between collections, conflicts with city solid waste rules. Lost or damaged carts are tracked by serial number and assigned to the residence; replacements are arranged through Environmental Services.
