Trinity County's Title 8 solid-waste chapter (Chapter 8.08) makes improper disposal and accumulation of solid waste a nuisance. For County curbside customers, the Solid Waste Department requires trash to be bagged, tied and secured with no loose trash, in containers no larger than 33 gallons and no more than 50 pounds each. Most residents self-haul to County transfer sites.
Refuse handling in all-unincorporated Trinity County is run by the County's own Solid Waste Department (a division of the Department of Agriculture), not a private city franchise. Title 8 (Health, Safety and Nuisances), Chapter 8.08 (Solid Waste Disposal), makes it unlawful to dump or accumulate solid or hazardous waste on public or private property and treats such conditions as nuisances that the County can abate at the violator's cost. For residents who subscribe to the County's residential curbside collection (available in some areas, not all), the Solid Waste Department's published service rules require that all trash be bagged, tied and secured, with no loose trash in cans, in containers no larger than 33 gallons, and weighing no more than 50 pounds per container. Containers must be out by 6:00 a.m. on the collection day, and missed-collection problems must be reported within three working days. Because curbside service is not available countywide, many residents instead store waste properly and self-haul it to one of the County transfer sites. However waste is stored, it must not be allowed to accumulate in a way that creates odors, attracts vermin, or otherwise becomes a public-health nuisance under Title 8. Improperly stored or accumulated refuse, and illegal dumping, are enforced by the County. Contact Solid Waste at 530-623-1326 to confirm whether curbside service is offered at your address.
Improper storage, accumulation, or illegal dumping of solid waste is a nuisance under Title 8 / Chapter 8.08; the County may abate and recover costs, and the chapter provides for fines (not less than $1,000 plus abatement cost for creating/maintaining a nuisance; up to $1,000 for an infraction violation). Curbside container limits (33 gal / 50 lb, bagged and tied) are set by the Solid Waste Department.
