The Lake County Zoning Code requires that, in commercial, industrial, manufacturing, and multi-family residential zoning districts, owners erect and maintain a solid fence or wall not less than five feet in height completely enclosing containers used for collecting refuse, including dumpsters, multiple trash cans, boxes, garbage bags, paper, cardboard, and plastic bags. This is a screening standard for higher-intensity uses. For ordinary single-family homes, the county imposes no specific trash-can placement or screening rule at the county level; pickup and bin handling are set by your private hauler and, in incorporated areas, the city or town.
Failure to screen refuse containers is a zoning violation under Chapter 154, enforced by the Plan Commission through notice, fines, or abatement.
