Under Iowa's noxious weed law (Iowa Code 317.10), every landowner must destroy noxious weeds on their land. Polk County treats weeds over 12 inches as a viable complaint; contact the Polk County Weed Commission.
Iowa Code 317.10 imposes a statewide duty: each owner and each person in possession or control of land must cut, burn, or otherwise destroy all noxious weeds. The county board of supervisors, through the weed commissioner, enforces this. Polk County advises that to be a viable complaint weeds should be longer than 12 inches; the Weed Commission is reached at 515-286-3005. Tall grass and weeds may also be a health nuisance under the county regulation when they harbor vermin.
Under Chapter 317, if an owner fails to destroy noxious weeds after notice, the county weed commissioner may destroy them and assess the cost against the property as a tax.
