In Elyria, weeds, grasses, vines, or any ground cover growing to eight inches or higher is declared a nuisance. Owners and occupants must cut vegetation during the growing season or the city will mow and charge them.
Ohio counties do not set lawn-height limits inside cities, so the rule is municipal. Elyria Codified Ordinances 553.02 declares weeds, vetch, grasses, vines, or any other ground cover reaching eight inches or higher a nuisance, and Section 553.03 lets the city remove it if the owner does not. The eight-inch threshold is stricter than the twelve-inch figure in the adopted IPMC. Lorain and other cities set their own heights (commonly eight to twelve inches). On unincorporated township land, ORC 5579 lets the township order noxious weeds cut and assess the cost against the property.
Failure to cut after notice lets Elyria mow or clear the property at $300 per hour with a one-hour minimum (prorated); the charge can be certified to the tax duplicate.
