Washoe County requires every food worker in Reno restaurants and food trucks to obtain a food handler card within 30 days of hire. Cards are valid for three years and must be presented during inspections.
Washoe County Health District operates a food handler certification program for all employees who handle unpackaged food, food equipment, or utensils. Workers complete an approved online or in-person course covering hygiene, cross-contamination, time and temperature control, and allergen awareness. Cards cost roughly $15 and are valid for three years. At least one certified food protection manager (CFPM) must also be on staff at each establishment. Inspectors may issue citations if any food handler lacks a current card.
Employing uncertified food handlers brings fines of $100 per worker per inspection, plus possible permit suspension. Repeat or willful violations can lead to permit revocation and required staff retraining before reopening.
