Nevada law NRS 202.2493 prohibits the sale of tobacco, vapor products, and alternative nicotine products to anyone under 21. Reno retailers must verify ID for all buyers appearing under 40 years old.
Nevada raised its tobacco purchase age to 21 in 2020 to align with the federal Tobacco 21 law. NRS 202.2493 covers cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, e-cigarettes, vape pods, and synthetic nicotine. Reno retailers must post age-warning signage, train clerks on ID checks, and use age-restricted self-service displays. Violations are enforced by both Washoe County Health District and the Nevada Department of Taxation. Underage purchase attempts using fake ID may also trigger criminal charges against the buyer.
Selling tobacco or vape products to minors brings fines starting at $500 for a first offense, escalating to $2,500 and license suspension. Three violations in 24 months may result in retail tobacco license revocation.
