Under California Medical Waste Management Act (Health and Safety Code section 117600 et seq.), home-generated sharps must be placed in approved FDA-cleared containers and brought to authorized collection points such as household hazardous waste facilities, pharmacies, or mail-back programs. Riverside County operates ABOP and household hazardous waste collection sites in Mecca, Murrieta, Palm Springs, and Riverside accepting sharps from residents at no charge. Tossing loose syringes in curbside bins is a misdemeanor and creates serious risk for sanitation workers. Some retail pharmacies also offer collection.
