Short-term rental operators in Richmond, Texas must collect and remit the City's Hotel Occupancy Tax in addition to state and Fort Bend County hotel occupancy taxes.
The City of Richmond imposes a local Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) on stays of fewer than 30 consecutive days at hotels, motels, bed-and-breakfasts, and short-term rentals located within the city limits and its extraterritorial jurisdiction. Operators must register with the Richmond Finance Department, collect the tax from guests, and file periodic returns. The local tax is in addition to the 6% Texas state HOT and the Fort Bend County HOT (2% inside city limits) that took effect October 1, 2024.
Failure to register, collect, or remit Hotel Occupancy Tax may result in penalties, interest on unpaid tax, audit assessments, and enforcement action by the City Finance Department.
