Washington County prohibits garage sale signs in the public right-of-way along county roads. Temporary signs on private property are allowed under CDC 414. Signs must be removed immediately after the sale.
Garage sale, yard sale, and estate sale signs are classified as temporary signs under CDC 414. On private property with owner consent, small temporary signs up to 6 square feet are permitted without a permit. Placement in the public right-of-way (between utility poles, including ditches, shoulders, and sidewalks) along county roads is prohibited under ORS 368.942 and R&O 98-197. Signs on utility poles, street lights, power poles, traffic signposts, and signal cabinets are not allowed and may be removed by county staff without notice. Directional signs placed off-premises typically require owner consent of the host property. Hillsboro, Beaverton, and Tigard each have similar right-of-way prohibitions under their city sign codes. Signs should be posted no more than 24 to 48 hours before the sale and removed within 24 hours afterward.
Right-of-way signs: removal without notice by Land Use and Transportation. Signs left up past the sale: code compliance notice, potential fine $25 to $100. Report roadside signs to 503-846-ROAD.
