Garage-sale and other temporary signs in unincorporated Mariposa County fall under Zoning Code section 17.108.190. On-site signs are limited to a maximum aggregate area of 16 square feet and a maximum height of 20 feet, with no flashing lights or moving parts. Off-site signs are prohibited, and 'temporary' is defined as displayed 21 days or less.
Mariposa County Code section 17.108.190 (Signs) states the intent is 'to reduce the proliferation of signs to maintain the scenic quality of the county's transportation corridors and to generally preserve the rural appearance of the county.' Subsection A permits 'A temporary or permanent on-site sign or signs with maximum aggregate area of 16 sq. ft. and containing no outline tubing, flashing lights or moving parts ... on all parcels,' with 'a maximum height of 20 feet.' It adds that 'Off-site signs are prohibited unless specifically permitted by the principal zone.' The County's FAQ confirms: 'Your sign may only be placed on your own property. The County Zoning Ordinance does not allow off-site signs.' That means garage-sale signs posted along roads or on other people's property are not allowed. A 'temporary sign' is defined as a display, information sign, banner, or other advertising device displayed for a total of twenty-one (21) days or less, and time limits for temporary signs are set in section 17.148.010 of the County code. Because the entire county is unincorporated, these standards apply countywide (town planning areas may have additional sign standards in their area plans).
Off-site garage-sale signs (in rights-of-way or on others' property) and on-site signs exceeding 16 sq ft or 20 ft in height are subject to removal and code enforcement by Mariposa County Planning. Signs in the state highway right-of-way may also be removed by Caltrans.
