Monterey County's sign code does not single out garage or yard sale signs. Such signs fall under general temporary-sign limits in Title 21 (inland) and Title 20 (coastal). Off-site temporary signs are limited in size, may not be placed in the road right-of-way, and must be promptly removed; comparable off-site open-house signs are capped at 7 square feet.
Neither Monterey County's inland Title 21 sign chapter (21.60) nor the Coastal Zone Title 20 sign chapter (20.60) contains a provision specifically named for 'garage sale' or 'yard sale' signs. These short-term signs are instead governed by the general temporary and off-site sign provisions. In the Coastal Zone, off-site open-house/directional signs are limited to 7 square feet and 4 feet in height, may be displayed only from 10:00 a.m. to dusk, and must be removed at the end of the day; off-site signs between 7 and 20 square feet require a Coastal Administrative Permit (sections 20.60.060). Temporary construction signs are limited to no more than 2 per lot and 24 square feet aggregate, 6 feet maximum height if freestanding, may not be illuminated, and may not be located within any road right-of-way. Because the county does not publish a garage-sale-specific allowance, the safest practice is to place small temporary sale signs only on private property with permission, keep them off the public right-of-way and utility poles, and remove them promptly after the sale. Owners should confirm specifics with Monterey County Planning Services.
Temporary signs placed in the public road right-of-way, on utility poles, or left up after the event may be removed by the county. Off-site signs exceeding the size thresholds may require a permit, especially in the Coastal Zone.
