Salinas, CA Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Sec. 15A-5 governs signage for any garage, patio or back-yard sale permitted under Chapter 15A: a sign no larger than four square feet in area may be displayed on the premises announcing the sale, but only during the permitted time of the sale set under Sec. 15A-4. The section is explicit that no sign may be displayed at any location off the premises, which rules out the common practice of posting directional signs at nearby intersections, on street medians, utility poles or neighboring properties, even with the neighbor's consent.

The sign rule attaches to the same permit required under Sec. 15A-1 and Sec. 15A-2; because a sale cannot run more than three consecutive days or two consecutive weekends of two days each, the on-premises sign likewise cannot go up before the sale's permitted first day or stay up after the sale's last permitted day and hour of 6:00 p.m. Sec. 15A-6 makes any violation of the chapter, including displaying a sign larger than four square feet or posting it off the seller's own premises, an infraction. Applicants obtain the underlying sale permit from the license collector's office by filing the application described in Sec. 15A-2, and the sign privilege exists only for the dates listed on that approved permit.
