Salinas, CA Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Sec. 350 sets the basic off-street parking rules that apply citywide, and subsection (l), Prohibited Locations, is direct: no vehicle may be parked within a front or corner side yard in an R or NU (NE, NG-1, and NG-2) zoning district except on a paved driveway that provides direct access to the required parking serving the site and meets the driveway standards of Sec. 450. 150, caps residential driveway widths at 10 feet for a one-car garage, 20 feet for a two-car garage, and 28 feet for a three-car garage, limits driveways to 50% of the lot's street frontage, and allows no more than two driveways per residential lot.

Subsection (k), Paving, backs up the front-yard rule with a general surfacing requirement: any area used for parking, loading, maneuvering, storage, dismantling, wrecking, salvage, or sale of vehicles, recreational vehicles, or machinery must be surfaced and maintained with asphaltic, concrete, or other permanent material sufficient to keep mud, dust, and loose material from escaping the paved area and to keep hazardous substances from reaching ground or surface water, subject to the city engineer's approval. 150 width and frontage limits. A property owner who wants a wider residential driveway than the table allows must apply for a conditional use permit for a driveway width increase under Sec. 450(b)(7).
