Salinas, CA Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Salinas targets heavy commercial trucking in its neighborhoods through Sec. 1, part of Article VII (Restricted Use of Certain Streets) in Chapter 20. The rule prohibits parking or standing any commercial vehicle with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or more on any street inside a residential district, unless the truck is actively making a pickup or delivery at a building on that street, or hauling materials for a repair, remodel, or construction job for which a building permit has already been issued.

The ordinance defines a qualifying 'residence district' with a density test: a stretch of highway qualifies if thirteen or more separate dwellings or business structures front one side within a quarter mile, or sixteen or more front both sides combined within that distance; a qualifying district can run longer than a quarter mile if that density continues. This section works alongside the broader Sec. 20-100, which lets the city traffic engineer post signs banning any commercial vehicle of 6,000 pounds GVWR or more from specific streets the council designates, and Sec.

20-99, which restricts trucks over 6,000 pounds from posted streets citywide, both carved out for buses, school buses, motor homes, pickups, and mounted campers. Unlike those companion sections, Sec. 1 does not require posted signage to take effect, the residential-district threshold applies automatically to any qualifying street. Enforcement falls to the Salinas Police Department, and the restriction traces to Ordinance No. 1629 (NCS), later amended by Ordinance Nos. 1671, 1742, and 1873.
