Selma allows garage sale signs on private property without a permit. Signs limited to 6 sq ft. No public property placement. Remove signs when sale ends.
The City of Selma regulates garage sale signs as temporary signs under its zoning ordinance (Title 11). Signs advertising a garage, yard, or estate sale may be displayed on the property where the sale takes place without a permit. Signs are typically limited to 6 square feet per sign face. Off-premises directional signs pointing to the sale location are permitted on private property with the property owner's written permission. Signs may not be placed on public property, including sidewalks, medians, utility poles, traffic signs, fire hydrants, or street lights. Signs placed in the public right-of-way are subject to immediate removal by the City. Signs must not obstruct pedestrian or vehicular traffic or impede visibility at intersections. All garage sale signs must be removed at the end of each sale day. Signs must be securely posted and must not blow into traffic areas. The City may conduct periodic sweeps to remove illegally placed signs from public property and rights-of-way. Residents are encouraged to use online platforms to advertise garage sales to reduce sign clutter. The City does not limit the number of garage sales a household may hold per year, but each sale typically may not exceed three consecutive days.
Signs placed on public property or in the right-of-way are subject to immediate removal by the City without notice. Signs left up after the sale ends may result in a code enforcement notice. Repeated violations may result in administrative citations with fines.
