In unincorporated Sutter County, garage/yard sale signs are allowed without a permit under Zoning Code Section 1500-21-050(B)(3): a maximum of one on-site and two off-site signs, each no larger than 5 sq ft and 6 ft tall, removed within 24 hours after the sale ends, and never affixed to a utility pole or street sign pole.
Sutter County's Zoning Code allows garage and yard sale signs without a permit under the temporary-sign provisions of Section 1500-21-050. Subsection (B)(3), covering 'Garage/Yard Sale and Short Term Agricultural Sale/Auction Signs,' permits a maximum of one on-site sign and two off-site signs. Each sign may be no more than 5 square feet in area and no more than 6 feet in height. All such signs must be removed no later than 24 hours after the conclusion of the sale, and they shall not be affixed to any utility pole or street sign pole. Because these are temporary signs exempt from permitting, they do not count toward the allowable sign area or number of signs on a site. General sign prohibitions in Section 1500-21-080 still apply: signs may not be placed in the public right-of-way or easements, may not obstruct safe sight distances at intersections, roads, or driveways, and may not be located within a corner-lot clear-vision triangle or on public property. The same allowance covers short-term agricultural sale and auction signs. These standards were adopted by ordinance dated June 28, 2022.
Posting more than the allowed one on-site and two off-site signs, exceeding the 5-square-foot or 6-foot limits, attaching signs to utility or street-sign poles, placing signs in the right-of-way, or leaving signs up more than 24 hours after the sale can result in sign removal and code-enforcement action.
