Suffolk County municipalities allow residential holiday decorations without permits. Displays must not block sidewalks, obstruct sight lines, or create fire hazards. Boston Fire Department (NFPA 1-based code) restricts combustible decorations in multi-unit buildings. Inflatable and noise-making displays are subject to local nuisance bylaws. Most decorations should be removed within 30-45 days after the holiday.
Holiday decorations on private property are treated as protected expression and face minimal regulation in Suffolk County. No permits are required for typical residential displays. Boston Code of Ordinances Β§16-12 (nuisances) and the noise ordinance apply if a display creates sound or blocks public rights of way. Boston Fire Department enforces 527 CMR 1.00 (MA Comprehensive Fire Safety Code) β combustible decorations including natural-cut Christmas trees are prohibited in multi-unit buildings of 3+ stories without sprinkler protection per 527 CMR 1.00 Chapter 10. Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop follow 527 CMR 1.00 through their local fire departments. Decorations cannot obstruct any sidewalk (violation of MGL c. 85, Β§2 and local ordinances) or block sight lines at intersections (typical 25-foot sight triangle under zoning). Inflatable decorations must be secured against wind and not extend into the public way. Electrical decorations must use outdoor-rated equipment, GFCI-protected outlets per Massachusetts Electrical Code (527 CMR 12.00, adopting NEC). Decorations that use recorded music or sound effects trigger the local noise bylaw β Boston Code Β§16-26 sets quiet hours 11 PM to 7 AM. HOA or condo associations may set additional rules in Suffolk County's many condo buildings. Seasonal enforcement is complaint-driven; most cities request removal within 30-45 days after the holiday.
Sidewalk obstruction: $100 fine. Noise violations: $100-$300 under Boston Β§16-26. Fire code violations: up to $1,000 under 527 CMR 1.00. HOA non-compliance: association fines.
