Holiday displays and decorations on private property are generally permitted in San Francisco without a permit. Displays must not obstruct sidewalks, create traffic hazards, or violate electrical codes. The city does not regulate the content of private holiday displays.
Residential holiday displays are not subject to sign permit requirements under the Planning Code. However, displays that use electrical lighting must comply with building and electrical codes. Displays cannot extend into the public right-of-way or obstruct pedestrian or vehicular traffic. Inflatable displays and large structures may need to meet structural requirements. Commercial properties displaying holiday-themed signage may be subject to Planning Code sign regulations.
Displays that create safety hazards or obstruct public rights-of-way may be subject to removal or code enforcement action. Electrical violations are enforced by DBI.
