Sparta Township regulates political signs as temporary signs under Chapter 18 of the Township Code (Land Use - Signs). Political signs do not require a permit and may be displayed for up to 47 days. The township defines a temporary sign as any sign displayed or erected for a maximum of 47 days, which includes political signs, real-estate signs, and contractor signs.
Chapter 18 of the Sparta Township Code (Land Use and Development) controls signage. Political signs are explicitly classified as temporary signs that do not require a permit when displayed on private property. The 47-day maximum display period applies to all temporary signs unless extended by the Township Council during an election cycle. Signs must be located on private property with the owner's permission, must not exceed the size limits set for the zoning district (typically 6 sq ft in residential zones), and may not be placed on public rights-of-way, utility poles, or trees. Signs may not obstruct sight triangles at intersections (Chapter 18 sight-distance provisions). The 2023 sign ordinance amendment (Ordinance 23-03) clarified rules around flags, bunting, and string lights but maintained the temporary-sign classification for political messaging.
Violation of Sparta's sign regulations is a township ordinance violation under Chapter 1-5 of the Code, punishable by a fine up to $1,250 and/or 90 days of community service per N.J.S.A. 40:49-5. Repeat violations and signs left up beyond the 47-day window may be removed by code enforcement at the owner's expense.
