Ann Arbor's sign code is content-neutral: noncommercial messages, including political messages, may be placed on any lawfully permitted sign. Single- and two-family lots may display up to six temporary freestanding signs (12 sq ft each) plus one small sign year-round.
Washtenaw County does not zone land; Ann Arbor's Unified Development Code (Section 5.24) regulates signs by size, location, and duration rather than content. Regardless of any provision, noncommercial messages may be placed or substituted on any lawfully permitted sign. On single- and two-family lots, temporary freestanding signs are limited to 20 sq ft total per lot, 12 sq ft per sign, a maximum of six signs, 6-foot height, and a 5-foot setback. Temporary freestanding signs may display up to 65 continuous days with a 30-day gap. Separately, one nonilluminated temporary freestanding sign up to 6 sq ft is allowed at any time with no display-period limit. Signs may not be placed in the public right-of-way, on trees, or on utility
Signs placed in the public right-of-way in violation of the code may be removed and destroyed by the city without notice; other violations are municipal civil infractions.
