Most Rensselaer County municipalities honor No Soliciting signs. Troy City Code Ch. 225 requires solicitors to leave upon request and prohibits entry onto posted properties. Violations are ordinance infractions enforced by local police or code enforcement.
Rensselaer County itself does not maintain a county-wide anti-solicitation ordinance; door-to-door peddling is regulated at the city, town, and village level. In Troy, Chapter 225 of the City Code requires most commercial solicitors to obtain a peddler/solicitor license from the City Clerk, carry identification, and honor any posted 'No Soliciting' sign. Solicitors must leave immediately upon request and may not return within a reasonable period. Towns such as North Greenbush, East Greenbush, Brunswick, and Schaghticoke have comparable registration requirements for commercial solicitors, while non-commercial canvassing (political, religious, charitable) generally remains protected under the First Amendment per the U.S. Supreme Court's Watchtower v. Stratton (2002) decision. Residents should report violations to their local police department non-emergency line or the Rensselaer County Sheriff at (518) 266-1900 in unincorporated areas.
Troy ordinance infractions typically carry fines of $50-$250 per violation; repeat or unlicensed solicitation may result in court appearance tickets. Refusing to leave posted property can also trigger NY Penal Law Β§140.05 trespass charges (violation, up to 15 days).
