Newton honors NO SOLICITING signs at homes. Solicitors who ignore posted signs can be charged with trespass and have permits revoked. Residents may also join internal no-contact lists.
Newton residents may post NO SOLICITING or NO TRESPASSING signs at their property to legally bar door-to-door solicitors, peddlers, and commercial callers from approaching. Under Newton ordinance and MGL c.266 s.120 (trespass), a clearly posted sign is legal notice. A solicitor who knocks or rings despite a visible sign can have their Newton permit revoked and face trespass charges. Signs should be placed prominently at the main entrance, driveway entrance, or mailbox in a size readable from the public way (4 by 6 inches minimum recommended). The federal Do Not Call Registry (donotcall.gov) covers telemarketing calls but not in-person solicitation. Residents receiving repeated visits from the same company despite posted signs should report incidents to Newton Police with dates, times, and any identifying information such as shirt logos, vehicle plates, or permit numbers. Certain activities like mail delivery, utility meter reading, and emergency services are exempt. Political and religious canvassers have stronger speech protections but most still voluntarily honor posted signs.
