Louisiana Pool Barrier Code Sets Minimum Standards

Under La. R.S. 40:1730.21 et seq., the Louisiana State Uniform Construction Code Council adopts the ISPSC and IRC sections governing pool barriers. Residential pools deeper than 24 inches must be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches tall, with self-closing self-latching gates, openings under 4 inches, and specific clearance from grade. Pool covers must meet ASTM standards. Walls of homes used as part of the barrier require door alarms or self-closing devices on doors leading to the pool area. The code applies to new construction and substantial renovations across all parishes.

Building code violations: stop-work orders, daily fines $100-$500, denial of certificate of occupancy, and required corrective construction.
