Baton Rouge requires pool barriers meeting the adopted building code standards. Pool fencing must be at least 48 inches tall with self-closing, self-latching gates. All pool installations require building permits.
Baton Rouge follows the International Building Code and International Residential Code as adopted in the city-parish building code (Title 8) for pool barrier requirements. Pool fencing must be at least 48 inches tall with no climbable features on the exterior. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, with latches on the pool side above the reach of small children. The barrier must completely enclose the pool area. Doors from the house providing direct pool access should have self-closing devices or alarms. All pool installations require a building permit from the Department of Development.
Pools without required barriers may not pass inspection. Existing non-compliant pools receive code enforcement notices with compliance deadlines.
