Nebraska Dangerous and Nuisance Dog Statute

Neb. Rev. Stat. § 54-617 et seq. governs dangerous dog classifications statewide and authorizes animal control authorities to act against dogs whose behavior, including persistent barking that disturbs neighbors, constitutes a public nuisance. While state law sets the framework for dangerous and potentially dangerous dog determinations, day-to-day barking enforcement falls to local animal control under municipal codes. Owners of dogs declared dangerous must spay or neuter, microchip, secure the animal, and post warning signs. Violations can result in misdemeanor charges and impoundment under Chapter 54 of the Nebraska Revised Statutes.
