SWACO operates a countywide single-stream recycling program. Accepted materials: paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, steel cans, plastic bottles and jugs (numbers 1, 2, 5), and glass bottles. Not accepted: plastic bags, styrofoam, food-soiled items, or items smaller than 3 inches. Franklin County reached 50 percent recycling rate in 2022, highest in Ohio.
SWACOs goal is to reach 75 percent waste diversion by 2032. The authority operates a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) on Fields Avenue in Grove City where residential recyclables are sorted. Contamination rates (non-recyclable items in carts) under 10 percent are considered acceptable; carts with visible contamination may be tagged and left uncollected. SWACO operates the Recycle Right education program. Bagged recyclables are rejected because plastic bags jam MRF equipment. Textiles and clothing should go to Goodwill, Volunteers of America, or SWACO clothing collection events, not the recycling cart.
