Aurora protects heritage and significant trees through the UDO. Removal of large or historically important trees may require a public hearing. Extra protections apply during construction to preserve root zones.
Aurora's UDO provides protections for heritage and significant trees. Removal of large, mature, or historically significant trees may require a public hearing before the Zoning Board or Planning Commission. During construction, tree protection zones must be maintained around preserved trees to protect root systems. Construction activity, grade changes, and material storage within the drip line of protected trees is prohibited without approval. The city's forestry division maintains an inventory of significant public trees. Native species and trees that contribute to the urban canopy receive priority protection.
Heritage tree removal without hearing: significant fines and mandatory replacement at higher ratios.
