DeSoto County has no formal heritage tree registry, but Hernando preserves 24+ inch DBH trees as 'significant trees' in its tree preservation ordinance. Courthouse Square live oaks historically protected.
DeSoto County does not operate a heritage/landmark tree registry. Hernando's tree preservation ordinance (Code Ch. 74) designates trees 24 inches DBH or larger as 'significant trees' requiring preservation efforts during development β effectively a heritage tree standard. The live oaks around Hernando Courthouse Square (DeSoto County seat since 1836) are historically protected through civic tradition and city parks department care rather than formal designation. Southaven, Olive Branch, and Horn Lake have no heritage tree programs. MS Magnolia (state tree) receives no special local protection. Construction damage to significant trees in Hernando triggers replacement requirements. Residents may nominate trees to Mississippi Forestry Commission's Big Trees registry for recognition but this confers no legal protection.
Damaging Hernando significant tree: $500 to $5,000 plus remediation. Unauthorized removal during construction: stop-work plus 3:1 replacement. MS Forestry registry is advisory only.
