New Orleans requires replacement of removed public trees and may require replacement for large private trees removed during development. The city's tree replacement ratio may require multiple replacement trees for each tree removed, especially for large or heritage trees.
When public trees are removed, the Department of Parks and Parkways manages replacement planting. Development projects that require tree removal must provide replacement trees at ratios determined by the removed tree's species and size. Live oaks and other heritage species may require enhanced replacement ratios. Replacement trees must meet minimum caliper requirements and be from the city's approved species list.
Failure to provide required replacement trees may result in fines, permit holds, and required payment into the city's tree replacement fund.
