Oak Lawn replaces parkway trees removed by the Village through its Public Works forestry program. Development permits may impose replacement or tree-mitigation conditions for trees impacted by construction.
When Oak Lawn Public Works removes a parkway tree for disease, storm damage, or infrastructure conflict, replacement planting is scheduled through the Village's parkway tree program, typically the following planting season. Residents may submit species preferences, but the Village selects from an approved list favoring diverse, climate-resilient species to reduce monoculture risk (an ongoing concern after emerald ash borer losses). For private development, tree-replacement or mitigation conditions may be attached to subdivision approvals, planned developments, or variances when significant trees are removed. The Village does not maintain a general tree-replacement ordinance for private removals on existing single-family lots.
Failure to comply with a development-condition tree replacement: permit enforcement, fines up to $750 per day, and possible withholding of certificate of occupancy.
