Schaumburg requires replacement plantings when significant trees are removed. Replacement ratios vary by tree size, with heritage-sized trees requiring higher ratios to mitigate canopy loss.
The Village of Schaumburg's tree preservation ordinance requires replacement plantings when significant trees (8+ inches DBH) are removed from private property or during development. Standard replacement ratios require one replacement tree for each significant tree removed. Trees exceeding 24 inches DBH require enhanced replacement at ratios of 2:1 or 3:1 depending on the species and circumstance. Replacement trees must be a minimum caliper of 2.5 inches for deciduous species and 6 feet tall for evergreens. Approved replacement species must be from the Village's recommended tree list, which emphasizes native and climate-adapted species. When on-site replacement is not feasible due to space constraints, the property owner may contribute to the Village's Tree Replacement Fund, which finances parkway and public space tree plantings throughout the community. The Village Forester approves all replacement plans and inspects planted trees for compliance.
Failure to plant required replacements: fines plus the cost of Village-contracted planting. Replacement trees that die within 2 years must be replaced at the owner's expense.
